This is the face of someone who just did her first ever Lupron shot.
YEH, BITCHES! I lost my IF virginity at 8.30 this morning!!
For those of you who nervously await the day you pop your injectable cherries, after the hand-washing, the ins and outs went a little something like this:
- Tie pyjama top in fashionable 80’s knot.
- Pop off the vial’s cap.
- Swab the top with alcohol towelette.
- Stick needle into vial.
- Turn needle-vial upside-down.
- Pull on plunger to 25 units.
- Place needle-vial onto flat surface.
- Squeeze excess units out, leaving 20.
- Pull out needle, replace orange cap, set aside.
- Wash hands again.
- Swab abdomen.
- Pinch fat between thumb and forefinger.
- Take a deep breath.
- Question chosen injection site.
- Eyeball ½-inch needle warily.
- Remember there are other, bigger needles to come…
- Take another deep breath.
- Check to see the scoop side faces me.
- Remind myself why I’m doing this.
- …and… IN LIKE A DART!
- Gingerly depress plunger.
- Notice there is no pain.
- Feel like a pro.
DH remarked that I needn’t have gone so fast — and, indeed, it did go in awfully easily. Tomorrow I may experiment by injecting the needle a little slower.
Bearing in mind the vial of Lupron had been chilling in the fridge for a couple of days, I was expecting to feel a bit of discomfort. Lemme tell all you ART cherry-poppin’ mamas-to-be, this here shot was a piece of cake. The ladies on Twitter aren’t glossing over your nerves when they tell you the build-up is worse than the actual thing. Easy peasy, pudding, and pie. You’ll be amazed at what you can do.
Ten minutes later, there was a little redness — probably more from my pinching than the needle. But, no bruising, no pain. A tiny amount of warmth, but only because I went looking for sensations.
Now I’m waiting for horrible side effects.
Like, headaches, vertigo, fatigue, moodiness.
Or maybe I won’t get any.
Huh. I gotta say, gals, that was easy. Hope it stays that way.

Awesome! (and can i just say, you have such a lovely flat stomach) xx
Catwoman73 says
Love it! So glad it went well! And you don’t look like you have an inch of fat to pinch, my dear!!! :)
Lauren says
I’m more of a pear shape, that’s true :)
Denise says
Yay! Cherry poppin’ mama! You’ll be tough enough when the big needles come your way (progesterone in oil?!)- a pro
Lauren says
No PIO for me — I’m set to take progesterone vaginally, lucky me! But the estradiol has a big ole needle. Lucky DH gets to inject me!
Wife of a Sailor says
For some of my injections, I’d get a red spot/get itchy-burny 5-10 minutes after the shot. You’ve got this now! If you want even easier needles for Lupron, you can get the 29 gauge insulin needles from a pharmacy. I got a pack of 10 for $3. They were actually much better than the duller, larger ones in the Lupron box. Same type of needle since Lupron uses insulin needles.
Lauren says
You know, I think my pharmacy is really on top of things, because my needles are for diabetics! They do look about 29 gauge. Second shot this morning was a lot easier, and, yes, I too have a red splotchy area one hour later. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
