I’ve been thinking about how to express the various stages of pregnancy joy, loss, and infertility grief I’ve passed / am passing through this year. There have been a few movie scenes which I keep coming back to — the obvious ones are the Mr. Stork scene in Dumbo, and the miscarriage scene in Up, as well as other miscellaneous movie clips depicting grief and despair.
I’ve decided I’m going to compile them into a video montage. Between all the doctors’ appointments and my trip to London, I’ve had to withdraw from my two classes this semester, and I need a project to work on.
What are your suggestions for miscarriage / grief / despair / infertility as depicted in the movies? Please share in the comments below — and if you have a link, even better.
Thanks xo

There’s a scene in ‘Tangled’ right before the lantern lighting festival where the king is looking very sad and the queen gives up to him and touches his face and they both look at each other longingly. It’s very touching.

The Life of Pi scene spoken of hit me pretty hard as well. Another thing that hit me hard is not a “scene” but a song that describes mourning. The Thompson Twins did a song called “The Long Goodbye” years ago. It was written after Alannah lost her child and her mother on the same day according to the reports at the time the song was originally released. I think it would have been better received in the 90’s than it was in the 80’s, though. To this day that one still gets to me The link to the original video is restricted, but the link to the fan made video isn’t. At least the song quality is pretty good, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31XzQ9Dwgro

Great idea hun.
You might not have seen this yet but Southcliffe was another brilliant short series on Channel 4 recently. Add it to your list I gave you already. Warning: it’s the heaviest, most devastatingly sad show I’ve ever seen but it really resonated with me. So many dimensions of grief and despair are displayed throughout, I feel like I could be any one of the characters in their meltdowns and coping mechanisms. Also, I always found Atonement so raw, I guess it’s the loss of the future that strikes me so strongly. Something we can relate to, even if for different reasons. xx

Life of Pi when he’s stuck out at sea and he loses faith.

Good one! I’ve been drawn to the ocean and many metaphors of being lost at sea, so this is a great suggestion! Thanks xo
