Happy Mothers’ Day to all of you wonderful women, whether or not you already mother living children:
Whether you are thinking of your miscarried or stillborn babies,
or the children who fought for their lives in the NICU;
Whether you are on your first IUI, or your sixth round of IVF,
or are fundraising money so you can just get started;
Whether you have given up the genetic link through adoption,
or donor egg / sperm / embryo;
Whether you are carrying new life with cautious optimism,
or staring, once again, at a glaring single line;
Whether you effortlessly procreate but are a staunch ally of the ALI community,
or, after years of trying, have decided to live child-free;
Whether you are a single mother by choice,
or coming to terms with the idea that you will remain a family of three;
Whether you have an RE because your body doesn’t work like it should,
or because you are in a same-sex relationship;
Whether you mourn your child or your mother
because of illness, death, estrangement, or abuse;
Today I celebrate all women for our strength, for our love,
and for our desire and ability to nurture each other.
None more so than in this community. I never wanted to be in this club, but I am proud to be a member.
Wherever you are on your journey,
Big love indeed.
